In the headlines: A molecule can detect diabetes before the first symptoms.
Scientists in Geneva have found a molecule that can identify diabetes before the first symptoms appear. A simple blood sampling followed by an affordable test could identify a potential diabetes onset, allowing action to be taken before the situation becomes irreversible.
With 500’000 people suffering from diabetes in Switzerland, a third of the patients already have cardiovascular, renal or neuronal complications at the time of diagnosis. Prevention is therefore essential in the context of this pathology as it helps to reduce the risk of severe complications later on.
This discovery opens up new avenues and still needs to test in different types of patients and at different timescales, but it should lead to significant progress in monitoring people at risk.
