This week, a birth marks a turning point in the history of reproductive medicine in Europe. In Sion, baby Lucien was born on May 13, the result of a groundbreaking medical journey: his mother is the first patient in Europe to carry a pregnancy after undergoing uterine transposition.
This innovative technique makes it possible to preserve fertility in women with pelvic cancer requiring radiotherapy. By temporarily relocating the uterus and ovaries outside the radiation zone (as high as the upper abdomen), doctors in Valais, in collaboration with Brazilian specialists, have opened a new path for a small number of patients eligible each year in Switzerland.
This achievement was made possible thanks to minimally invasive surgery, close coordination among medical teams… and a determination to push boundaries to reconcile cancer treatment with life plans.
