In the headlines: During this period of health crisis, discover how the Swiss health system is working to innovate and continuously improve the health care system.
Every new drug must be tested before it is approved and administered. This is a long and complicated phase that often results in failure. This represents a lot of wasted time and money. But this failure rate could be considerably reduced thanks to the start-up, ArcoScreen, a spin-off from EPFL, founded this year by Margaux Duchamp and Thamani Dahoun. The two young women have developed a revolutionary test that is capable of predicting the efficacy or otherwise of a drug very quickly and at an early stage of the trial.
On another note, perhaps tomorrow a container will be sent to a country hit by a dangerous covid mutation or a new disease. Within a week, it will be able to make a serum on the spot to neutralize the virus. This container would only make sense with messenger RNA technology, which allows for rapid and inexpensive vaccine production. It would also have no reason to exist without a “pilot plant”, why not in Switzerland, whose mission would be to produce, very quickly, doses for clinical trials and to ensure Switzerland’s needs in vaccines. The container, the mRNA and this factory are the central pieces of the “Lighthouse” project. The initiative aims to fill the gaps in vaccine production and distribution highlighted by the pandemic.
